By the beginning of the 20th Century, the US was realizing the dire need for reform. With all the quick expanding and the industrializing of America, many of the rights of the certain groups in society were being over looked. The dire need for reform was soon apparent and the government realized it was their duty to aid the public in this reform. These changes were called the progressive reform movement. The beginning events leading up to, the meaning behind, to the accomplishments of the progressive reform movement, played a part in the attempt at improving America.
The events leading up to the reform movement involved the lack of concern given to the poverty stricken citizens in America. The immigrant workers, especially the children, that were forced to work long, strenuous hours for little pay under extremely unhealthy conditions. Document one is an excerpt from a speech given by Senator Elihu Root. Root discusses the reasons why the reform movement began and says "...the new conditions {growing from} the...industrial development of the last half-century are continuously and progressively demanding the readjustment of the relations between {society} and the establishment of new legal rights and obligations not
There have been skeptics that have said the reform movement failed and didn't make an impact on society. Though there are others that say all that could realistically be done, was accomplished. What came out of the progressive reform movement? Congress enacted a wide range of regulations between 1901 and 1908. Congress passes laws that ensured the safety of food and drugs, stopped unfair railroad practices, and preserved scenic land throughout the country. The laws made history not only because of their effects on the nation's economy and natural environment, but also because they set a precedent for the increased regulation of U.S. business. The progressive reform movement may not have solved every problem plaguing our nation, but it did make aware that our nation needed improvement.
