After the Cold War The Resonating Nuclear Threat
Over the course of the 20th Century, nearly every aspect of international politics had been redefined. The United States began the 1900s with a primarily isolationist attitude with respect to other states and their right to sovereignty. However, by Century's end, the United States rose to be the planet's one super-power, not without the large US nose sticking itself into everyone else's business. And, over that 100-year period, innumerable causes and effects have led to that conclusion. Arguably, the finale of World War II was the most major turning point. The post World War II state of affairs left two victors: the United States and the Soviet Union, both vying for political and economic control of the modern world. Both countries were at odds, however the 40 year period known as The Cold War was a sort of incubator for two developing siblings. Once the Iron Curtain fell in 1989, they were both released; the 1990s were years where both countries were left blinking in the sunlight, wondering what to do with the new world before them, both taking on new roles they had never played. The US and the Russia/Soviet Union that entered the Cold War were now two very different countries, extremely modern and holding an extremely d
ifferent amount of power. They had never been without each other until now. Unfortunately, these efforts to create a more stable, peaceful world still leave a serious threat on a devastatingly nuclear scale. Just when the US and Russia are nervously trying to figure out how to handle their new post Cold War roles and relationship with each other, a number of other countries within the Third World have expanded and developed their powers militarily. Besides immediate threats to US security in these new countries, they are also a possible threat to themselves. Although India and Pakistan now have nuclear capabilities, they do not have the technological advancements to aid them in properly detecting and deploying them, making room for fatal errors (Hamill, p. 152). Suddenly, countries that never played an important role in US affairs appeared on radar without us being aware beforehand; the balance of power in East Asia had been violently upset. The US is not pleased with this; Washington over-estimated its influence on post Cold War politics and now it realizes that it will have to adopt a more "proactive" approach to keeping peace in the world (Hamill, p.153). By this, the US will have to get rid of the nuclear strong arm it has wielded for half a century and merely give economic rewards to those who do what is in the US's best interest (Hamill, p. 153). Again, the US must redefine itself on the global stage; brawn is replaced with economic threats. This called for some re-definition.
