banfield's theories

The 1992 Los Angeles Riots seen through "Front-line: LA Riot" fit a numerous amount of Professor Banefield's theories. They do indicate evidence of class problems and portray the governments handling of its responsibilities as poor and unorganized.

There are four motivations that imply a certain character to a riot; rampage, foray for pillage, outburst of righteous indignation, and demonstration. They all display qualities dealing with the Los Angeles Riots.

Rampage expressed no pattern of violence from when it started. The rioters burned buildings, looted stores, vandalized property, and assaulted other people. These violent acts were spontaneous; carried out without any idea or thought behind them. This exemplify that there was no pattern and all actions based on random destruction. Another characteristic was the African American rioters had the feeling that they had been pushed around. They believed that they had been by taken advantage of for a many years and this was a resurrection or a lashing out expressing that they have had enough. These examples are the

basis of Banefield's theory of rampage.

The last theory of rioting is demonstration. The gathering of Parker Center would be the only example of demonstrating. That assembly was somewhat planned and organized but then grew out of control containing many mini riots. This was staged to influence the public's opinion and to advance the ideology that the government is wrong.

The class problems that were expressed in this videotape was the mainly the based on the lower class. The way that many of the people had spoke; very uneducated and not intelligent thoughts. For example the destruction of buildings and stores would diminish jobs and increase the reason for major business to leave, in fear of the people themselves. There was not thought in what good this could do for the community and the mark this would leave on the community. The problem mainly was that the majority of the rioters did not know any better. It seemed that they believed what they were doing would help.

The Los Angeles riots support Professor Banefield's theories and show evidence of class proble
