Canada's role
Canada is a constitutional monarchy with a federal parliamentary form of government and a extensive market economic system. Laws are made by the government for the people, with the ruling body being that of the majority. The various economic problems of recent years have stimulated serious debate about the proper role of public policy. Parties on the political left advocating more control and state planning, while right side extremists lobbying the idea of deregulation or total freedom from government influence. Is the government being responsible and fair to its citizens and are they obligated to care for the poor and elderly? To give the people a helping hand? If so, to what extent? Over the years the government has slowly become more involved in the lives of ordinary Canadian citizens. In the beginning, the average Canadian had little to no contact with the federal government. But, today with the high taxation of ones paychecks, to anti harassment laws in the work place, to ridiculous safety requirements, everybody is well aware of "big brothers" doings. Supply-siders feel that taxation as well as regulation on private enterprise should be abolished. They argue that no ones going to want to make a profit if the more you make, the more is taken. This state, free of tax and government control, is theoretically great but only for the upper class minority. Canada rules by a majority government, meaning that the will of the majority is always met no matter how loud the minority cries. Even though Canada has bilingual status, English speakers in Quebec and French speakers in other parts of Canada must live and work in the language of the majority. Some say that these laws are an infringement on the minorities natural right to liberty and a result of the tyranny of the majority. While others say that the laws were made by and should serve the majority no matter how they upset people. William Sumner shared his advice with the statement, "There is...no liberty under law. Law does not restrict liberty; it creates the only real liberty there is." The relationship between the people and the government is not "Us vs. Them" or "Good vs. Evil". The government is in place to serve the people, and if serving them includes entitlements than so be it. I'm not going to be the one to sit back and watch my neighbors suffer because it's better for the Country. "Without the help of thousands of others, any one of us would die, naked and starved."
