Clinton vs. Johnson's Impeachment
More than 130 years ago, our nation faced the same thing that it faces now- the impeachment of the President of the United States. President Andrew Johnson faced the same ordeal that President Clinton is now facing. Although both men went through the same process, their circumstances were quite different. President Johnson, who was not elected, but rather became president after Lincoln's death, was virtually hated by the members of Congress. The Radicals Republicans of that time were just looking for a way to get Johnson out office. President Clinton's problem on the other hand is his personal affairs. Congress believes that his behavior towards them and the citizens of the United States is unacceptable. The processes and trials of Johnson and Clinton are different in the reasons for impeachment, the general state of the nation and people, and the differing styles of running the office of president. The reasons for impeachment of Johnson and Clinton were very different. President Johnson came into office at an incredibly turbulent time. Not only had a great leader just been assassinated, but the end of a long war had just come. Congress did not think very highly of Johnson or his ideas about the South and slavery.
To respond to Johnson's many vetoes, Congress passed the Tenure of Office Act and the Command of Army Act. They then voted to impeach the president. The whole issue of his relations with Monica Lewinsky and the fact that he did not tell the whole truth is basically what brought about his charges. There were also charges that he informed Ms. Lewinsky to lie about their contacts under oath. Clinton's perjury account is that he made "perjurious false and misleading statements" to a federal grand jury about "the nature and, details of his relationship" with Lewinsky. Although the two men seem to face similar situations, the circumstances that surround them are very different. In the 210 years that this country has been under the rule of a President, only twice has the issue of impeachment come up. Although the circumstances surrounding President Johnson and President Clinton are very different, the situations that they experience are very unique. This may never happen again in history. These two men share something, that although not a pleasant experience, it is a vital part of history. Even though President Johnson was not removed from office, his trial and impeachment still set the precedent for future trials. Now, President Clinton's fate as president now sits in the hands of the members of Congress. The people of the United S
