Comparison of The World War's Causes

There are many causes of WW1 and WW2, some similar and some different. I will discuss three similar reasons for the outbreaks, and two major differences from the two wars.

The first reason of the wars is nationalism or the country's sense of pride and lust for power. In WW1, Germany wanted to expand its new boarders, strengthen their territory and challenge Britain for the most powerful country on the planet. Germany had been created in 1871 and the German people had a building sense of pride for their new country. Austria wanted to expand its nearby land as well, into Serbia and the Balkans. The Austrians also didn't like the anit-Austrian propaganda being spread throughout what is now Bosnia. The Bosnian Serbs and Slavs had great national pride and wanted independence from Austria.

The same was true in WW2. Germany wanted to expand its empire throughout Europe, and have more 'living space'. The sense of national pride, which was tarnished by the War Guilt Clause from the Treaty of Versailles, needed to be fixed, and Hitler encouraged Nationalism emphatically. Also, Russia felt betrayed by Hitler because of Operation Barbarossa and fought a bloody battle to victory.

of the two wars was the need for countries to acquire wealth and resources. In WW1, countries such as Britain, France, and other European countries looked elsewhere for rare treasures. In Africa, jewels like diamonds were mined, as well as gold in South Africa. Oil was another precious commodity from Africa and the Middle East. Special foods, fabrics and materials were brought from India and the East Indies. Some of these items were sold to make money, others were used for advancement of military items. A point in both wars was the protection of Britain's trade routes. They wanted to protect the Suez canal, and owned Gibraltar to make sure no enemy ships entered the Mediterranean Sea. In WW2 the turning point of El-Alamein is the best known occurrence of trade protection.

The third reason which is similar on both wars is the notion of alliances. In WW1 some of the Allies were brought into war because of agreements. Such an example of this is Britain entering because of the invasion of Belgium. The Germans thought of their alliance as a 'scrap of paper', but the British held true to their word. Part of the reason why Russia came into WW1 was because of their alliance, or backing, of the slavs in Bosnia and Serbia. The slavs were fighting against the Austrian-Hungary empire, with Germany's backing. So The Germans and Austrians/Hungarians were at war with The slavs and Russia. Therefore, Russia and the western powers became the allies.

Although imperialism played a part in both wars, the first was based more singularly on this point, as th
