Peasants were very poor and were treated like slaves. Basically, they were slaves and did not own anything. In Shakspere's day, the aim of fashion was to wear a fully rounded figure. They used their clothes to achieve a body figure similar to the shape of an hour glass. Dresses were framed with whale bone and stuffed with padding to give them an umbrella shape. The lace used with their clothing was stiffened with steel. Lower class people couldn't afford fancy clothing and weren't concerned with wearing underwear either. At the height of fashion, the upper class people wore ruffed collars sometimes one meter in diameter. The men wore more jewelry and fancy collars than the woman did. There were certain rules that had to be followed. Men wore a style of clothing according to their stature.

The Elizabethan Church started in 1559. Two thirds of the English population was Roman Catholic, and other Catholics put this number higher. There were not many Protestants at the time. The Catholics greatly outnumbered all other religious groups and London became the Catholic Capitol of the world.
