The movie "Black Rain" discusses many important details about how the Japanese society works. This 1988 movie was about a family who lived in Hiroshima during the time of the bombing. It showed how the radiation sickness that came from the bombing affected the Japanese people. It specifically mentioned the Japanese community during that time, the involvement of the Japanese government, the Japanese culture and history, and it painted a humanistic portrait of the Japanese people.

"Black Rain" was a touching story about a young girl named Yasuko Shizuma, her uncle, Mr. Shizuma and her aunt, Shigeko Shizuma. In 1945, this family was living in Hiroshima when it was hit by an atomic bomb. The niece, Yasuko and her aunt, Shigeko were both effected by this atomic blast and suffered radiation effects because of it. The aunt was the first family member to be struck by the radiation sickness so the family moved to the grandmother's house when they found out about her illness. Another type of community that the Japanese society showed was the community within the families. By this I mean that they took care of each other within their own family. This is shown when Mr. Shizuma takes his niece in to live with them after her parents are killed. He also takes care of his wife while she is ill from the radiation sickness. Mr. Shizuma also tried to secure a life for his niece by finding her a suitable husband. Another member of the family was Yasuko's grandmother who also cared and showed concern when Mr. Shizuma was trying to marry off Yasuko. The grandmother said for Yasuko not to get married because she will die and that it would be a shame to lose her. Outside of this family was another caring and supportive family which was the madman's family. They had a close knit family because the mother was willing to go and beg for Yasuko's hand in marriage for her son. Also, every time that the madman would freakout, her and her husband would try to protect him from himself and other people around the community. This type of devotion within the families show that there was a close community within the Japanese family, even if there was not in the community..

This film is definitely a humanistic film because it takes the audience through the bombing and the after effects of the radiation on the Japanese people. It does not just tell a story of a family that was affected, but it talks about their lives in a way that the audience has no choice but to feel the pain that these people felt.
