Throughout the end of the 20th century, contemporary adolescent society has built an obsession with pop culture. They have continued and drastically altered trends in music, style, as well as ways of living. Specifically, youth culture's obsession with clothing has skyrocketed to an almost disease. In particular, the laid back comfortable style of "Abercrombie clothing", has sparked much interest among teens in America. The relaxed intellectually messy trend of dressing has become extremely popular among high school and college students. Males seem to follow this trend more than their counter parts. To further describe this style of clothing, certain clothing companies have focused on solely this particular style and they are reaping the benefits. The two leaders of this new trend of clothing are Abercrombie & Fitch and American Eagle Outfitters. Both brands of clothing almost resemble each other perfectly. Their clothes are easily identifiable. Abercrombie and American Eagles' models are always wearing their recognizable checkered flannel button-up shirts, polo
shirts, ring neck tee shirts, faded kakis, and ripped up baseball caps. The simplest words to describe how their models appear in ads are: intellectual, easy going, relaxed, and young. Which is everything most young people would like to be.
I am a fan of this look and what is strange to me is that 5 years ago I use to dress in baggy jeans and shirts, but now I wear pressed kakis and polo shirts. The concept of dressing casual but a little sloppy would have been out of the question to me back then. However with my age, my style of dressing changed and I began mixing and matching faded shirts with wore-in kakis shorts and beat up shoes. I'm not precisely sure why this style is so popular to others, but for me it is because it is a more laid back carefree look, that still allows the person to look respectable. I do believe that this style of dress is sort of a take off of what private school students might wear when they are out of school. It is sort of a "preppie" look.
