The Good Earth

The Good Earth, by Pearl S. Buck, is a tale of a farmer who rises from a commoner to a wealthy land owner. The setting is in pre-revolutionary China, sometime in the 20th century. The story is about a farmer who becomes a wealthy man through hard work while facing droughts and floods. He becomes very rich, but forgets his true love, the earth, which got him to where he was. As he grows as a character in the novel he goes from poor to rich. In the novel the main character, Wang Lung, shows several qualities that helps him grow as a character. These qualities of Wang Lung are him being humble, lustful, and dedicated.

In the earlier years of his life, Wang Lung was humble man. He had little and he needed little. His house was small and it was made of "great squares of earth dug from their [Wang Lung and his father's] own fields, and thatched with straw from their own wheat." Wang Lung then bought O-lan from the House of Hwang. She took much of the responsibility that Wang had once had, in result giving him more tim


e to work his land and eventually buy more land. When difficult times fell upon the Wang Lung family and their land, such as floods, they traveled south to the city. In the city the "great fat fellow", gave Wang Lung the gold, which he used to return to his land. During there stay in the South, O-lan unexpectedly found herself in front of jewels that eventually made Wang Lung a wealthy man. With these jewels, Wang Lung bought lots of land as well as other stuff for his own pleasure.

In the story, Wang Lung is considered a very respected man for his absolute dedication to his land and his daughter, "Poor Fool." During the Story, Wang Lung never gets to a point where he sells his land, despite his wealth. He is so dedicated in what he does that no matter how rich he is or how many people ask to buy it, he wouldn't sell his land. He would go out early in the morning to farm his land and come back late in the evening tired, yet proud. One would find this attributes of a character inspiring to many others.
