Fitzgerald about the corruption of the time and the forgotten dream and oath taken by the American people. He embodies many themes in the novel; the most salient one relates to the corruption of the American Dream. The American Dream. The idea that each person no matter who he or she is, no matter of what circumstance or situation they lay in, can become successful in life by his or her own hard work. The dream embodies the idea of a self-sufficient man, an entrepreneur making his own life a success for himself, he was granted no aid but seized upon opportunities and chances in order to reach his goal of Freedom. But this was a time when man, no longer found happiness in simple pleasures. The American people were no longer looking for such once dreams of life; in the form of liberty and the pursuit of happiness. "I became aware of the old island here that flowered once for Dutch sailors' eyes-a fresh green breast of the New World" (Page.189) This quote shows the pristine goals of the individuals, a view that the possibilities, for us as a people, are endless; you can accomplish anything through hard work and graft. These are the times of the 'roaring twenties'. Cars are the things to have and a party is the place to be, a carnival type atmosphere similar to that of the ninety's is present. Everybody wants something, from the rich and pretigious, to the poverty stricken homeless. The 'Great Gatsby', describes the events that happen to eight people during the summer of 1922 during the beginning of this spree. The Great Gatsby is not just about the death of the American dream, but also about what happens to the the dream during the 1920s, a time period when the dream has been corrupted by the avaricious pursuit of wealth. The pursuit of the American dream is the sublime motivation for the accomplishment of one's goals, as well as a producer for achievements, however when the dream was tainted with wealth it becomes devoid and hollow. When the American dream was to many a pure way of life, it showed the path into the future upheld in the community and the country. Motivation and ambition were the driving forces and examples that were set by the ways the dream became established. "I see now that this has been a story of the West, after all-Tom and Gatsby, Daisy and Jordan and I, were all westerners and perhaps we possessed some deficiency in common which made us subtly unadaptable to eastern life." (Page.184) "He stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way...and distinguished nothing except a single green light" (Page. 26)
