FRQ on Progressive movement
"For the first time in American History, the President was the leading radical, reformer and man of the people. Teddy Roosevelt make Andrew Jackson look like an Old World aristocrat." With such a prolific man leading their party, it is no wonder the reform movement of the Progressives was so successful and in fact was viable as a reform movement from 1900 through 1925. The three places that they made the most headway in were; social, economics, and political fields. In those fields the progressives looked to help out the common man and make the elite few pay their dues to society. Under the shepherding of Roosevelt the Progressives made great headway on social issues of the nation. The first way that they reformed the workplace was giving the workers more rights by backing labor unions. A key example of this is in the Anthracite Coal Strike in 1902 where instead of using the National Guard to put down the union, Roosevelt used it to threaten the owners to comply with the union's demands. This shows a turn from a big business friendly government under McKinley and moving toward helping out the workers and the common man in general. From this incident the deep canyon between labor and corporations was seen and the Dep
In the economic area Roosevelt and other progressive president took a hard line toward Trusts of the time. The first real time where the corporations were forced to do something that they didn't want to do was in the Anthracite Coal strike in 1902. This kicked off an invasion of the corporations when the Department of Commerce and Labor was created because in this department was a Bureau named the Bureau of Corporations. Through this bureau they were able to investigate trusts and interrogate them through the long misused Interstate Commerce Commission. Not only that but in the Elkins act of 1903 and the Hepburn act of 1906 they didn't allow kickbacks or rebates from railroads to trusts just for using their railways. A prime example of the trust busting was in the Northern Securities Case in 1903. In this suit we saw the dissolving of the Northern Securities trust and kicked off the trusts busting that the Progressives were know for. So as you can see from this the progressives were very reform minded looking out for the little people in economics. artment of Commerce and Labor was formed in 1903. This department successfully appeased the workers with a way to keep the government in business to keep everything fair for the workers. But the progressives didn't stop there in trying to make the workplace better, they gave women special rights in the workplace with the verdict in the Muller v. Oregon case, they gave seaman better conditions in the La Follette Seaman's act, they gave workman's compensation to workers in 1916, and in Lochner v. New York they gave bakers a 10 hour work day. So one can see that the progressive movement was in fact a valid reform movement in the area of labor. But as good as the reforms were for the good of the people, the progressives passed the eighteenth amendment in 1919. This amendment was totally against everything that the progressives fought for thus far in their existence. It took away civil liberties from law-abiding citizens and went against what this country was all about. This amendment although thought to be a large part of the progressive movement was in fact not very good for their cause at all. But as bad as this amendment w
