Hail to the Queen
Have you ever been in a time of total distress? Did you feel like you were at the end of your rope with no one to turn to? The best way to withdraw yourself from these struggling times is to receive the comfort from a mentor. Let me tell you about Queen Elizabeth and how she comforted her people in a fearful and depressing situation. After the attack of the Spaniards, although the English defeated them, the people of England still feared King Philip and his Spanish army, called the Armada (World Book Encyclopedia by Salvin, Arthur J. P. 239). Queen Elizabeth wrote and presented a speech to the soldiers assembled at Tilbury (Salvin, Arthur J. P. 239). The speech that gave the people of England courage and hope. Finally, Elizabeth reluctantly agreed to have Mary beheaded in 1587 (Salvin, Arthur J. P.239). When King Philip heard of what happened, he was enraged. Queen Mary had appointed Philip as her heir (Erickson, Carolly p.143). He also found out about Elizabeth supporting the Netherlands troops against Spanish rule. He destroyed 30 Spanish war ships and stole large amounts of treasure from the galleons. These events led up to King Philip's final decision to pull the Spanish forces from the Netherlands, and direct them to attack the English people (The Norton Anthology of English Literature).
