The surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown, Virginia, on the "19th of October, 1781," marks the successful close of the American Revolution.(Johnston, 11) Though peace had yet to come, the final treaty was not to be ratified until two tears later; this battle was recognized by England's civil and military leaders, and by the spring of the year 1782 both parties stopped further aggressive operation. Cornwallis's first mistake that effected the outcome of the battle was that Cornwalllis abandoned North Carolina For Virginia, without waiting for reinforcements from New York to support Cornwallis. Second he failed to destroy Marquis de Lafayette army at Greene Spring and failed catching him and fallen back to Williamsburg. Third Cornwallis set himself to a trap by the Franco Americans forces by setting a base at a Yorktown, Virginia at a peninsula. Forth the royal fleet was beaten in he battle of the Cape by Admiral de Grasse that stopped British from giving reinforcements, supplies and equipment to Cornwallis at Yorktown. The American advantages, however, were not without their own advantages. A vast reservoir of main power could be drawn upon. For the most part, men preferred short term enlistment's and many who served came out for a few weeks or months but they did serve. The best estimates are that over two hundred thousands participated on the patriot side. General "Washington was often short of shoes and powder, but rarely were he and other commanders without men when they needed them most, although at times American leaders had to take into the army slaves, pardoned criminals, British deserters, and prisoners of war."(Stokebury, 246) Moreover, Americans especially Southernors owned guns, and they knew how to use them. If the Continental Army won few fixed battles, it normally fought reasonably well; it extracted a heavy toll on the enemy, who usually could not easily obtain reinforcements. Although only Washington and Major General Nathanael Greene were outstanding commanders, many others were steady and reliable, such as Henry Knox, Benjamin Lincoln, Anthony Wayne, Daniel Morgan, Baron von Steuben, the Marquis de Lafayette, and Benedict Arnold, before he defected to the enemy in 1780.
