Dr. James Naismith is the father of basketball. He was asked to invent a game to pass time, and he came up with two peach baskets and a ball. Although he created the game in the United States, he was born and raised in Canada. And even though the game has been taken over by the Americans, it will always be known that it's roots are a part of Canada. James Naismith will always be known as a great Canadian who contributed greatly to its reputation. In 1891, a man by the name of Luther Gulick who was the head of the Physical Education department at the YMCA, wanted a sport for males, that could be played indoors during the winter. He called upon one of the top students at the YMCA training school on Springfield Massachusettes. The man's name was James Naismith. One year later, the game of basketball was invented. James Naismith was born in Lanark County, Ontario. He grew up in a very strong Scottish Presbyterian surrounding. This atmosphere guided him to be interested in "tough guy" sports.
