Jewish Life Under Nazis WWII

"The Victims - their behavior and dilemma"

"The Jews", it has been said, went to their death like sheep to the slaughter (Marrus 108).

A call to arms; was made by young Zions in the ghetto of Vilna early 1942. But the Jews remained passive, avoided provocation and complied instantly with decrees and orders. They believed the German drive would, in time spend itself. The Jews had always been a minority, always in danger, but had learned they could survive by placating themselves and appeasing their enemy. They would at times curry favors that could prevent unnecessary sufferings. They would in some cases, anticipate what the Germans would want and respond.

The Nazis set up "Judenrate" (Marrus 110), Jewish councils, making their "automatic compliance" (Marrus 110) to "institutional compliance". (Marrus 110) The councils, under German will, were instrumental in various phases of the Jewish destruction process. Ghetto inmates were kidnapped, forced for labor or simply massacred. Compliance was what the Germans wanted at any cost. There was some resistance activity, but this was not encouraged. It was the belief of the leaders; resistance activities might hinder their strategy to gain time and postpone the liquidation of their ghettos for as long as possible. Their plan was for physical resistance just prior to liberation.

Believing that they have been abandoned by their leaders and the rest of the world, the Jews became totally subservient to the Germans. (Marrus 117) Yet with starvation, massacres, beatings and other forms of human degradation, a form of culture of sorts was beginning to emerge behind the wall of each ghetto. Inmates drank toasts to the new days coming and for a short time, breathed freely. Ghettos were cut off from the outside world and rumors were rampart, some true some not. How much was to be believed? (Marrus 119) Even when massive kil
