John Brown's Raid
Throughout the time period of the slavery, there were few civilian men who were willing to risk their life for the freedom of slaves everywhere. Among those who took this risk was John Brown. He was a simple man from Torrington, Connecticut, who had strong beliefs against slavery and was an active abolitionist. In order to further aid his protest, he planned to take overa U.S. Armory at Harpers Ferry and seize their weapons. The weapons would inturn be given to slaves in the surrounding territory and form them into a army which would then free the blacks throughout the South. Brown succeeded in his attempt, but was later surrounded and captured. He was given a trial, found guilty, and later was executed. A martyr is one who suffers death or persecution on account of their beliefs. John Brown is an excellent example of a martyr because he strongly protested slavery, even with the risks involved, he took action where in was needed, and he peacefully surrendered once surrounded, but he died with dignity and for what he believed First, Brown was a man who acquired his hatred for slavery early on in his life and continued to spread his beliefs throughout his entire life.
