In John Steinbeck's novel, The Pearl, the main character Kino, went through many dramatic changes in his life. Before finding the pearl, Kino was very peaceful and really wasn't aware of his people's poverty. After Kino had found the pearl, his life got twisted upside down. He became a very vicious and greedy person, and was willing to kill to protect his precious pearl. When Kino tragically lost his son Coyotito, he became very grief stricken and threw back the powerful pearl.
When the story opens, Steinbeck had Kino in a peaceful state of mind. He was very much in touch with nature and loved to be outdoors. Kino was deeply in love with his wife Juana, and his young son. Although poverty stricken, it did not affect Kino's outlook on life. Kino was just

He wished for Coyotito to go to school, and he wanted Juana and himself to be married in a church. He also wanted to purchase a rifle to make life easier. Once some of the people in the village heard about his great find, they began to make attempts to snatch the pearl. At this time, Kino became very defensive and malicious. He fought off an intruder during an attempt to steal the pearl, and he even resulted in killing another attacker. This caused Kino and his family to flee from the law.
