Mustang

Ford took bits and pieces from the Falcon and Fairlane cars and created what took the car industry by storm in 1964. The Mustang was the first of its kind and is the number one selling car of its class. The first generation mustangs, 1965 - 1973 set the pace for the following generations of mustangs. The advertisements Ford used to sell the mustangs also set the pace for future mustangs.

In 1962 The Mustang I was the first Mustang. It was a mid engine two seater that used space-age sub-frame technology (Campisano ). The Mustang II followed it. The Mustang II looked more like the real production Mustang.

The Mustang was unveiled on April 17, 1964 at New York's world Fair. The night before the unveiling Ford in vested $2 million in advertisement airtime around 9:00 p.m. on all major TV networks. Very few people were disappointed in the new Mustang. It was the first of its kind. With a long hood and short deck but most of all what made it the most interesting was it had a backseat. This was unheard of in 1964. A sports car with a back seat.

Ford could not produce enough Mustangs. There was such a great demand for them that there were people over running the Ford dealerships just to get a glimpse of Am

In 1967 there was a major restyle of the mustang. Ford didn't want it to lose the look of the original mustangs but they made it bigger. The mustang now can accompany the 200 six cylinder, the 289 V8, the 302 V8, and the 390 V8. Sales however dropped due to the added competition. Ford sold 472,121 (Sessler 193). By the end of 1968 sales dropped a hundred thousand to 317,404 (193). At the mid-point in 1968 Ford added another engine. The 428 Cobra Jet was added to help ford win in races. Although the mustang was still selling like hot cakes it didn't have enough horsepower to compete against Chevrolet and Pontiac on the roads of America. That changed with the introduction of the 428. At the Winternationals in Pomona eight specially prepared Mustang Cobra Jets raced and humiliated Chevy and Pontiac big blocks. Ford used the Winternationals to demonstrate why the public should turn away from Chevy and Pontiac.

The mustang came with an assortment of options. Ford offered the 170 cubic inch engine. It is a straight six. Ford also offered a 289 cubic inch engine. It is the V8 that was top of the line until 1967. Unlike today's generation of mustangs to get a V8 in the car it was ordered, but today to get the V8 it is part of the GT package.

The 1969 Model year brought around a change. The mustang was again changed. It grew bigger and there were two more added styles. The Mach I, the Boss 302 and 429 aided in persuading new buyers to a total of 299,824 (193).

The 1971 - 1973 models were the biggest the mustang will ever see. The top engine was the 351 V8. The body style didn'
