Ontario Election '99

The upcoming Ontario provincial election happening on June 3, 1999 has many issues that are the prime topics. The Progressive Conservatives are the current government. Many feel that they have stuck the province of Ontario into a state of turmoil, by education cut backs, health care cut backs another drastic changes to the province. Yet surprisingly they are still leading the race in the poles and are favoured to win once again. Within this paper, you will be informed on each parties position on the health care system of the Provence, taxation as well as the environment.

Health care is the main issue within the election and the Liberals and NDP are using it to their advantage. The PC government has made drastic cut backs within the past four years to the Ontario health care system. The OSSTF claims that the Harris government cut two billion dollars out of the health care system, laid off 10,000 nurses, shut down 35 hospitals, and closed 7,000 beds. The Liberals used this to there advantage in the provincial debate, when Dalton McGuinty Leader of the Liberal party spoke of a man that died on a stretcher, after spending all night in a hospital hallway. The Liberals within their campaign are promising, that patients in life-thre

On the issue of taxation each party takes a different stand. The PC's claim that they will cut income tax by 30% over the next five years. They will also cut small business taxes by 50%, as well as cutting property taxes by 20%. They will introduce Employer Health Tax exemptions for businesses with a payroll of less the $400,000. They believe that tax cuts are needed for a strong economy as tax cuts will create jobs. Lower taxes will encourage growth, and investment which are the multiplier effect. The PC's have a definite plan, which emphasize tax cuts, and economic growth. The NDP wants to reverse 30% income tax cut for anyone who earns more than 80,000 dollars a year. This includes 6% of the province's population. This will give their government 1.5 billion dollars in the revenue. Howard Hampton believes that Harris has given the wealthiest people in the Provence, a tax cut they don't need. They want a better distribution of wealth in the Provence. They also have a definite plan, like the PC. The Liberals on the other hand have a vague plan. They want to cut taxes in the future when the province's economy is booming. They also want to restore school board politicians. To the Liberals, taxation is not one of their major campaign topics.

The last issue I choose to discuss is the environment. At the debate from Scarborough East I posed a question to the candidates: "How can the government justify the 'Drive Clean' program when you permit the selling of gasoline with the highest sulphur content in North America?" The facts surrounding this question come from the press reporting that gasoline sold in Toronto has the highest level in North America appose to California that has the lowest. The 'Drive Clean' program was introduced by the PC's during the last four years, and was an admission test mandatory for all cars. This was a hope to help clean up our air pollution problem, where we have the third worst air pollution problem in North America behind only Texas and Louisiana
