Peter, Paul, and Mary: Helping the Cause

Over centuries music has been the universal voice that enables man not only to be entertained, but also to peacefully speak out on a given cause. Music is there to influence the moods and minds of disapproving or approving people. Protest music played a large role in the expanded freedom of African Americans in the civil rights era, and still plays an important part in the protests of today. Among the numerous groups that sang out for "the cause", was Peter, Paul, and Mary. Their music had a large influence during the civil rights era and continues to help and persuade the causes of today.

Peter Yarrow, Paul Stooky, and Mary Travers came together in a Greenwich Village during the early 1960's. Stooky began as a stand-up comic in the village clubs and became a familiar figure in singing events. At this time, Mary Travers was exploring the music outlook when she met Stooky and Milt Okun. She was previously known for her work in another band, and was prepared to be a vocalist. Okun was focusing on managing young talent, but felt that a trio would be bett


The music produced by Peter, Paul, and Mary continues to be a factor in many causes and many solutions. Music is the universal way of peacefully communicating. In the 1960's this band fought for civil rights and today they continue to have an impact on peoples lives and help causes that they believe in.

In 1968, Peter, Paul, and Mary raised money in support of Cesar Chavez and United Farm Workers. They became involved in the strike against Delano Grape pickers and spoke out against Vietnam. Peter, Paul, and Mary released an album in 1986 after their breakup and reunion, titled "No Easy Walk To Freedom." The bands attention was focused on the anti-apartheid cause. The band was involved in the Free South Africa movement and homeless awareness. Also, the song "Light One Candle" supports the battle for peace in Israel. ("March 19 in Santa Cruz-Watsonville")
