Puerto Rico's Government and Economy

Until the 1940's, Puerto Rico's economy paled in comparison to that of its neighbors in the continental United States. Despite the fact that it was a commonwealth of the US, Puerto Rico received very little in the way of economic attention from the government in Washington DC. In the 1940's, newly elected governor, Luis Muņoz Marin, started a program called Operation Bootstrap. The purpose of this program was to build up the economy of Puerto Rico so that it would be able to support itself. Now, the commonwealth is a leading manufacturer clothing, electronic goods, foods and chemicals among others.

Manufacturing is the driving force behind the economy in Puerto Rico, but there are other industries as well. The agriculture industry is very strong. There are two types of farms in Puerto Rico. The fi


Puerto Rico is very rich in minerals. The mining business accounts for over 160 million dollars in income each year. The majority of products that are mined are construction materials. They include cement, sand, gravel and stone. Other minerals are clay, graphite, lime and salt.

Puerto Rico is governed by a governor who is elected for a four year term and may be re-elected any number of times. Upon confirmation from the legislature, the governor appoints commonwealth executives. The legislature has to Houses: a Senate and a House of Representatives. This bicameral body is elected every four year. The highest court in Puerto Rico is the Supreme Court. The major trial court is the superior courts. The judges and justices of each court are appointed by the Governor with the approval of the Senate.<
