Roaring Twenties
The "Roaring Twenties" had come to an end. It was October 29, 1929, the market crashed andstocks lost almost half of their value , with dow jones falling from 452 to 58 in one day. A symbolic beginning for rough times ahead. A country's main source of prosperity nearly vanished, as the automobile and construction industry came to a halt. Purchasing power was unevenly distributed, huge land loans could not be paid off and banks began to fail. Americas years of prosperity had come to an end, as families found it difficult to provide even the most basic necessities. Families quickly found themselves without a source of income and at the brink of what became known as the Great Depression. The Great Depression had a tremendous effect on the entire country, but these rough times had an individual impact as-well. There were many different groups of Americans, all experiencing their own personal hardships. Among these groups were farmers, who suffered a great deal. In the book, Hard Times, it speaks of their despair. Farmers found themselves desperate, as they received little support from their country. Oscar Heline describes their struggle, "First, they'd take your farm, then they took your livestock, then your farm machi
