The Roaring 20's began with a bang. WW1 was over and people were turning to enjoyment with a vengeance. The United States, which had emerged as a leading power, set the trend in fashion and music.The Jazz age. Jazz was the music of choice, playing in clubs in Chicago, New York, Paris and London. One of the most influential jazz musicians was Louis Armstrong, who dazzeled crowds with his trumpet solos. U.S. writer F. Scott Fitzgerald described what it was like to be fashionable in his novels: the Great Gatsby and This Side of Paradise. In particular it showed how women embraced a new kind of freedom; they now had a right to vote. They wore shorter skirts, cropped their hair, danced in public, and drank at cocktail parties and nightclubs. Many new dances emerged, such as the "lindy hop" the "black bottom" and the "Charleston." Movies came of age in the 1920's. In 1927 "The Jazz singer" Synchronized pictures with sound. This is when going to the movies, began to be a regular habit. 1922 Bram stoker's 1897 novel Dracula hits the screen, Strange camera angels helped to give the movie an eeirie feeling. In May 1923 the first Le Mans 24-hour car race took place in France and ushered in an era of fast cars and a new sport, auto racing. In Europe and the United States railroad networks expanded and passenger airlines introduced scheduled flights, but the most remarkable developments were in automobiles. For the rich there were beautiful, handcrafted touring cars, such as Lagondas, or Bentleys. February 4th 1924, the first Winter Olympics finished today at Chamonix in the French Alps. The compitiion lasted 1-week, and consisted of mostly men competitors, because women were only allowed to compete in figure skating. There were only 18 nations at the first Olympics Canada included.
