The Anasazi Indians lived in the desert in southwest Colorado and in Mesa Verde, the largest archeologist preserve in the United States. The Anasazi also lived in Chaco Canyon and in two river valleys, the San Juan and the Colorado. Anasazi meant "the ancient ones." The legend that describes how the Anasazi first appeared goes like this. In the beginning, there was only the creator. Three worlds were created but destroyed by fire, ice, and flood. Those with the creator were spared with their lives. Those people became the fourth world. The people had to claim surrounding lands for the creator and then reunite with each other in the center of the world. Those people became the Anasazi Indians. The Sun Dagger was a sun calendar that was the way that the Anasazi told when the summer solstice would occur. It was made of a spiral carved into the face of a religious butte. Stone slabs were put together, but left just enough light to let the sun shine through at noon and at the spiral, forming the Sun Dagger. At noon on the day of the summer solstice, the dagger would be right at the middle of the spiral. The Sun Dagger was important to the Anasazi because they used it as a sun dial and to tell time. The Sun Dagger is important to us because it was like a primitive watch or clock to us, and without the Sun Dagger, we might have not had a good and convenient way of telling time today.
