The Annexation of Hawaii

The United States was built together by individual areas coming together as a whole. When we adjoin these areas we become stronger. Every state had something to offer the making of America. Some states like Alaska and Hawaii was chosen later out of necessity. As a member of congress I would want to know the history of Hawaii to understand how my decision would affect America and Hawaii.

Hawaii was made up of people from parts of Polynesia and from the Society Islands. The Westerners arrived in the late eighteenth century. In 1785 it became a beneficial trading port for European and North American ships heading to East Asia. In the early nineteenth century Hawaii became its own independent trader.

At the time the natives were unable to stop the changes occurring in Hawaii. As the transitions began to take place and more westerners came over, Hawaii started to loose some of its rich culture and religion. They were unhappy about what was happening. After the revolution took place they learned that sugar planters looking for the domestic bounty backed the overthrow.

American troops overthrew a government office building on January 17, 1893. The annexation process began two days following. In February a treaty was signed and the Republic of Hawaii was established. President Cleveland withdrew the treaty when he was in office but when McKinley became president he favored the annexation along with the American Republic.
