The Tragedy of Macbeth
There are many events in the play Macbeth, which contribute to tragedy. These events are the murders of many innocent people, and the deterioration of the main character and his relationship with others. The people murdered are Duncan, the king of Scotland; Banquo, who is Macbeth's loyal friend and partner as a general of the Scottish army; and Macduff's family. Macduff's wife and son were probably, in the reader's mind, the cruelest event in the entire play. At first Macbeth is very noble. He thinks rationally and would never think about taking the throne. He is fond of Duncan and even when the witches address him as king, he says "...to be king stands not within the prospect of belief"(I.iii.74-5). The tragedy is that he probably would not have killed Duncan if his wife hadn't embarrassed him and told him that he must prove that he is a man by doing this murder. The tragic events that occur in the play snowball into one big disaster. The murder of Duncan, the king of Scotland, is one of the main events of this tragedy. Duncan is liked by every one; his subjects, his generals, the noblemen of Scotland, and all others. However, for the greed of power, the general of his own
army, Macbeth, murders Duncan. Duncan has no fault. Macbeth's reason for murdering Duncan is to be his successor. He wants to be king badly; this is what drives him into coming up with the plan of killing Duncan (This and the fact that his wife convinces him to do it). The audience sees the first step to insanity here. Macbeth is driven to the craze of power. The three witches tell him that he would be king after Duncan had passed away. Macbeth was not patient enough to wait for Duncan to die of natural causes and so he kills him. The first terrible tragedy has happened. The second event which to caused this play become a tragedy is the death of Banquo. Macbeth was also told by the witches that Banquo's children would be Macbeth's successors. Macbeth gets worried that he will lose his throne and decides to have Banquo killed by murderers which he hires. Banquo's murder is also a great tragedy because he was also an innocent person who didn't deserve to die. He might have learned about Macbeth's role in Duncan's murder and Macbeth couldn't murder his son without raising suspicions from Banquo. These reasons played a significant part in Macbeth's decision to have him killed. Ba
