The Battle of Gettysburg 2
On the one hand, Gettysburg was an accident on the other, Gettysburg was inevitable. General Robert E. Lee followed the roads north toward Pennsylvania's capital Harrisburg. Gettysburg itself was a small town in size; it was at the intersection of many different roads. Lee's route led him and his troops to an encampment northwest of the town. One of the brigades was assigned the task of entering Gettysburg because earlier reports had it that there were shoes to be had in town. The Confederates encountered their enemy along one road outside town. Not knowing the size of the force they retreated. These northern brigades, it turned out, were the advance forces of the Union's left wing, coming from the south. This set the stage for the last great battle of the Civil War. General George Meade, who had been given his command only a few days earlier, led the Army of the Potomac. Meade entered the Military Academy in 1831 and was graduated four years later, ranking nineteenth in a class of fifty-six members. Lincoln, under pressure, removed General Joseph Hooker in favor of Meade. General Robert E. Lee headed the Army of Northern Virginia. On July 1, 1863, believing the supplies to be plentiful and opposition minimal, the Confed
During the cannonade, General Hancock calmly rode among his men. Hancock said, "There are times when a corps commander's life does not count." Hancock watched the Confederates begin to bunch near the center and become a large mass of soldiers. Opposite the main assault was the "Angle" - a point in the Union line where it formed a 90-degree angle. Positioned in the Angle, behind a stone wall, was the 71 PA Regiment (250 men). To their left, was the 69th PA, supported by five guns. As the Confederates pushed forward, the men and artillery in the Angle poured devastating fire into the approaching units. Still, the Confederates came, this time reaching the stone wall of the Angle. General Armistead led the Confederate attack with a group of about 200 men and overran most of the Union men in the Angle . This set the stage for Lee to make a momentous decision. Lee decided to put between 10,000 and 15,000 men into this all out attack. Pickett's Division was called upon, and he was joined by two of Hill's Divisions, one led by Brigadier General J.
