In the beginning of America formation, people from all over the world rushed into this great nation. They drove the American Indians who lived in this country for hundreds of years to the point of extinction. In the process, most of the American Indians were being killed or forced to move to the reservation; lives and traditions of the American Indian were cease to exist. Moreover, the herds of buffaloes, which once roaring in this nation, were no longer there. In the essay "Letter To President Pierce, 1855" by one of the greatest American Indian leaders, Chief Seattle, he expressed many criticisms about bad relationships between modern society and nature. He claim that modern man does not think the land is precious but a too to use. He claim that the modern man doesn't appreciate earth, for modern man it is a thing to conquer, to take for granted. Chief Seattle said he doesn't understand what modern man are trying to achieve by abused the land and kill all the beast: "The white man's dreams are hidden from us"(661). By using irony, he implied that he doesn't understand the dream of modern man or maybe there is no dream in modern man for him to see. Chief Seattle's criticisms are important warning and from the point of view of modern society of 1999, I believe all criticisms Chief Seattle spoke are relevant not only now but also the future of our generations.
