THE DECISION TO DROP THE ATOMIC BOMB It makes sense to say that the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima to intimidate the Soviet Union, and was not a strict military measure to force Japan to surrender unconditionally. This is a fact, because of the condition Japan was in and the fear of Soviet intervention, combines to be a very convincing assertion. Towards the end of WWII, Japan was already badly routed by American forces out in the Pacific (Doc B). Over half a million Japanese people were either dead or wounded, and about two million homes, in around 60 cities, were already destroyed due to the regular H.E.
