The Declaration of Independence was not successful to live up to it's ideals over the 220 years that it's been around. This document established the United States of America as an independent and free state, separated from British rule. This document failed because it did not fully protect the US citizen's rights to equality, life, and the pursuit of happiness.

This authoritative document failed to fully establish and invoke its ideas to keep every man equal. This is highly obvious in a recent incident that occurred in Columbine High School, where innocent children were annihilated. Yet, the elected few that were slaughtered that day were of another race, sexual preference, or "different" than the two killers. As it failed to protect rights of equality, the Declaration of Independence has failed to shelter the right to life. In 1996 alone, there were over 635 homicides in the United States of America. These people were brutally murdered, subconciensly thinking that they were protected by the Declaration and laws that were formed around the document. There are constant gang incidents in the cities that result in pedestrians or other members of a gang being murdered or hurt. Some of these gang members turn to gangs for protection that the US hasn't successfully given them yet. Not only are the rights of life for aged citizens violated, but the rights of life are constantly being taken away from premature babies when they are destroyed in the form of an abortion.
