The Hindenburg was a dirigible or airship. The dictionary defines dirigible as an air filled balloon. The Hindenburg was the largest airship to ever fly. It was filled with hydrogen and carried a gas volume of 7,062,000. In size comparison the Hindenburg was only 78 feet shorter than the Titanic. It was named after the a German General named Paul Von Hindenburg and second president of the Weiner republic who presided over the coming to power of Adolph Hitler. The Hindenburg carried the Swatsticka emblem over the vertical fins. Some of the pre-voyage information said that passengers could take 286 lbs. of baggage, each cabin was equipped with hot and cold running water and lamps that were lit continuously. All passengers were required to have passports. Life on aboard the airship
On March 4th, 1936 the largest man made object ever to fly took to the air. When the Hindenburg exploded it was on its first flight from Germany to America.
Many people believed that the U.S. was at fault for the crash due to the fact that the U.S would not sell the Zeppelin Company helium to fill up the ship. One of the reasons the U.S. would not give them the helium was that they believed that the Hindenburg was going to be used as a warship against them. Another reason was that the Hindenburg had been flown many times over Germany distributing pamphlets showing the power of the Nazi movement. Government officials thought that the Hindenburg could be used for further military purposes because it was large in size and possibly could hold bombs.
