Though 4650 BCE to 395 BCE the Egyptians developed a scared tradition of preparing the body for the afterlife. Mummification was originally meant for the Pharaohs and Kings. However, as time went on more and more people were being prepared to enjoy their afterlife.
It all started with the Egyptians of the early Predynastic Period. They did not artificially attempt to preserve the body as the Egyptians did in the later time periods. The deceased, wrapped in goat hide, was buried in a shallow pit dug out of the desert sand. Over time, the heat of the surrounding sand dried out the body. The earliest Egyptian mummies were created by dry, natural heat.
Later in this time period, the Egyptians made different types of tombs. The body was wrapped in a reed mat to prevent it from touching the sand. Eventually, these tombs were developed into wood coffins th

As the early Dynastic Period and Old Kingdom came into affect, the Egyptians put more value on life after death. To be recognized by the God Osiris, they needed to find a better way to preserve their dead. This started the first attempt at artificially preserving the body. The body was covered in linens and plaster in an attempt to create a solid cast that could be painted.
Around 1000 years later Egypt entered the New Kingdom. The process of mummification has been greatly refined and has become a more religious process. The stages of mummification have grown from a short period of time to seventy days.
