The How To Rise To Power
Throughout history, we have witnessed many people climb their way from lowly peasants to powerful dictators and leaders. All of these people had the some of the same attributes: passion towards a cause, strong beliefs in what they were fighting for, and most importantly, they held people's worst fears in their hands. By controlling fear, our most susceptible human emotion, leaders were able to effectively control the masses. This year in History and English, we have studied examples of evil leaders rising to power. Hitler in Nazi Germany, Stalin in Communist Russia, Chiang Kai-Shek in Nationalist China, Napoleon in Animal Farm, and Jack in The Lord of the Flies are leaders who have used fear and intimidation to claw their way to absolute power. Hitler struck fear in the hearts of many through his propaganda against the Jews and his infamous SS. Any who dared to speak out against their new dictator were hauled off to concentration camps. Soon, all signs of dissent against Hitler were silenced. The Enabling Act allowed Hitler to replace all labor unions with his Nazi-controlled labor union. He also banned all political parties except his own. An individual's livelihood was dependent on their
Chiang Kai-Shek in Nationalist China was just as brutal in his quest for power as the other leaders. After the agreement of the Nationalists and the Communists to fight together against the Japanese, Chiang realized that their moment of peace was the perfect time to strike against the Communist. Chiang attempted to purge all Communists from the Nationalist movement. One of the campaigns to exterminate the Communists led to The Long March. The Long March was a brutal chase of the Communist fleeing from the Nationalist in a race for their lives. Chiang used Guerilla Warfare to harass the Communists as they tried desperately to get into Northern China, where the Communists had more support from the people. As a result, Mao was forced to flee to the countryside. loyalty to Hitler. Hitler relied on his secret police, the Gestapo, and on jails and camps to intimidate and control his opponents and the masses. He claimed racial superiority for the Aryans and said that they had the right to dominate all non-Aryans. Because of this, he set up a campaign of terror against the Jews. His propaganda brainwashed thousands to believe that all of their misery and suffering was due to Jews. He played on and exploited their fear of the Jews dominating and controlling the economy. By directing their fears towards the Jews, he was able to give the masses a way of venting anger and frustration, instead of towards the government.
