The Italian Revolution of 1848
1848 in Italy was definitely a year to remember. It was a year when the people of Italy, who through nationalism, joined together to try to form one large country under one rule, an Italian rule. Italy at this time was divided into many different states. Austria ruled some parts, while others were profoundly independent, which followed the tradition of that of the Renaissance city-states. The Pope also ruled part of Italy. The Revolution in 1848 was therefore inspired by the Italians desire to be united and free of foreign rule. As said, 1848 was an amazing year, and so were those before and after. The revolution in Italy was very much inspired by nationalism and by a great leader named Giuseppe Mazzini. He was one of the first nationalists in Italy and inspired latter events in the revolution of Italy through his ideals, beliefs, and work. He said and argued that, "A people destined to achieve great things must one day or other form a nation-state." He was fighting for autonomy, but more for an Italy independent from the Hapsburgs for they ruled much of northern Italy. Mazzini, in his goal for liberty, formed a nationalist group called Young Italy, which no one older than 40 was allowed to join. His group claimed more than 60.0
Surprising was the fact that the revolution was so long and that we, the people of Italy, both of the northern and southern parts, united through nationalism and fought for our independence. We went to great lengths to get what we wanted even though we were ethnically and culturally very different. Those in the north spoke a different language to those in the south and also lived very different life styles. It was surprising that the revolution actually succeeded in the end, both because many of the revolutions in 1848 failed, and as mentioned, due to the separation of those in the north and the south because of contradictory cultures. Mazzini had problems at first because of the different cultures in the north and in the south and could not gain support, yet we prevailed in the end and won autonomy. Absolutely amazing... 00 supporters, yet his idea of nationalism gained little support from the Italian masses for cultural differences divided northern and southern Italy. Austria also tried very hard to suppress Mazzini and Young Italy, and tried to prevent Mazzini from continuing his work. Looking back on this revolution, though, I realize that of all the revolutions won in Europe, it takes a numerous alliances with foreign, powerful countries that enable a government to be over thrown.
