A detailed Summary of The New Deal 4

The attempt of President Franklin D. Roosevelt to bring the nation out of the depression, The New Deal, was a number of policies that for the most part did not fully accomplish the desired goals. Their failure was due mostly to poor execution and thinking behind the policies. It should not however be looked at as a complete failure because there were several advances and accomplishments that occurred. Despite the New Deal's failure to satisfy the goals set for it, several pieces of legislation passed set precedents that still exist in America.

President Roosevelt had preached for change to solve the problem of the Great Depression since he first ran for president. While Hoover was waiting for the business cycle to solve the problems of America, Roosevelt thought otherwise and told the American people while running, "I pledge you, I pledge myself to a new deal for the American people." Roosevelt believed that moving away from the Great Depression, It was necessary to provide the nation with relief, recovery, and reform. All three factors were dependent on each other and if relief, the first step was not completely successful then the others would fail also. While the legislation passed as part of the New Deal was somewhat effective and even in some cases accomplished a lot, the unrealistic goals that Roosevelt had set for the country were not met. While each of Roosevelt's three steps, relief, recovery, reform, were successful to some extent they where not successful as a whole. Each step would have had to have been completely successful in order for America to return to prosperity. When the largest sum of money possible is not flowing into the economy then there is no chance for it to be jumpstarted into growth. Several individual acts of the New Deal era were so sensible or perhaps unorthodox enough that they fit perfectly into American Society today. While the New Deal is not known for pulling the country out of the depression into a time of economic boom, it took a world war to do that; it does have a lasting legacy.

Some actions of the New Deal era have created a legacy in the United States government that even exists today. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation created a system that insured savings in banks.(Blum, 702) At the time this was very important because it helped the people to once again have confidence in the banks. Blum also believes that the actions of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation revealed "the New Deal's commitment to saving capitalism while reforming it"(702). Today this policy of insuring people's investments in banks is still a policy of the United States Government. While in our society it is probably not necessary for every investment up to one hundred thousand dollars to be protected, it still provides a sense of security to know that nothing can go wrong.

Another creation from the New deal that continues today in America is Social Security. It came into being when the Social Security Act was created to aid elderly unemployed and over the years it has developed greatly. The Country automatically takes care of the elderly once they retire. Overall it is something that the elderly have grown to depend on and are very grateful for the present Social Welfare program of America.
