The Progressive Era 3
The decades between 1890 and 1920 was a period of vital reform activity that historians have called, The Progressive Era. In this era millions of Americans organized in voluntary associations to come up with solutions to the many problems. Industrialization, with all its increase in productivity and the number of consumer goods, created unemployment and labor unrest, wasteful use of natural resources and abuses of corporate power. Growing cities added to the problems of poverty, disease, crime and corruption. The growing number of immigrants and the rise of the upper class, caused an upset to the normal class levels. Many people were convinced that equal opportunity was out of reach for most Americans. Who were the progressives? They were a group of young professional, middle class people. They wanted to apply principles of medicine, law, business and teaching to problems of society. They believed that progress and the education of people would overcome many problems. They organized many volunteer organizations to work on these issues. Illinois Factory Act. Passed in 1893 the act prohibited child labor and limited women's working hours. This act soon became a model for other states. Duri
We need to educate our children more against the dangers of drinking and we need to help them to deal with peer pressure. According to my article more teens than ever are turning to alcohol. Guidelines should be set up for the liquor industry like there is in the tobacco industry. So that advertisers stop to make drinking look so glamorous. Children especially young one are particularly susceptible to the attractiveness of alcohol. Parents also have to be more aware of their duties as role models for their children. Alcoholism is still in our society. This is evident with the 21st Amendment, which repealed the 18th Amendment. No drug has meant so much to so many as alcohol. Alcohol is a dinnertime relaxant, a bedtime sedative, and help us socialize at a party. It is used to celebrate holidays, accomplishments and celebrations in life. Young people think they show their maturity with alcohol, a large majority of high school children use alcohol, according to the newspapers. Alcohol is a tranquilizer you can buy without a prescription. No drug is as abused as alcohol. At least 20 million Americans are alcoholics. In the business world, excessive drinking has been linked to lower productivity, loss of employment and a downward movement in society. I do not believe all the solutions were successful. Progressive reformers created many institutions and policies that we accept as a natural part of our life today, and I do feel that many of these reforms would not be around today, if it wasn't for the participation of women. I do think women are slowly becoming equal with men. But it will be a long battle. As my article said the lawsuit was filed in 1995. It took three years and much fighting to win that suit. Sexual harassment is a big problem in today working environment. Many women are dependent on their jobs, making it difficult for them to report this for fear of loss of their job. Not only the job they have not, but any future employment.
