The Reagan Doctrine was developed by President Ronald Reagan in an attempt to help control communism from spreading and to help nations around the world that were struggling to gain democracy and freedom from dictatorships brought in by other Communist nations. The Doctrine stated that anyone who did not believe in God or Heaven could not be trusted. This statement was obviously aimed towards the Soviet government, since the Soviets did not believe in God or Heaven and were the main government involved in the spreading of Communism to other nations (Asimov). The enforcement of the Reagan Doctrine became visible in several places throughout the world, including Central America. President Reagan even decided in some cases to use secret operations to overthrow governments influenced by the Communists, even though such aid was prohibited by Congress at the time. President Reagan thought it would be best to avoid a direct confrontation with the Soviet Union and to just attack the smaller nations that were influenced by the Soviets to better control the spread of Communism (Reagan).
