The Treaty of Versailles 2
World War One has been said to have been one of the most bloody, as well as the most pointless wars of all time. The conflict ultimately arose in 1914 from the assassination of a mostly nameless and unknown Archduke Franz Ferdinand, who was the heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The "Great War" resulted in Germany and its partners' defeat, and their unconditional surrender to the allied forces. The conflict recorded 8,538,315 military personelle dead, with many more causalities, as well as a number of civilian losses. Also, there was enormous property and economic damage done to all of the countries involved. The War was formally ended with the infamous Treaty of Versailles, which, given the goals of the leaders involved, was designed to punish the Germans. As well, the harsh conditions and internal flaws of the treaty set the stage for another international military conflict. Each of the major political figures involved in the creation of the treaty had his own political agenda when they approached the problem of the settlement. The main players were France, Britain, The United States, and Italy, all of whom had different ideas and opinions, which arose in a clash. France had been a long time German rival, an
Due to the varying goals of the leaders involved, there was an obvious conflict of ideas. Through much controversy and debate, the Leaders came to a compromise. The most important terms of the compromised treaty were as follows; The German military was to be greatly restricted, as they could have no air force, a navy of only six warships with no submarines, an army of only 100,000 men, which could only tend to internal matters. Also, the treaty did not allow any German military unit(s) to be within 50km of the border. As for war responsibility, the treaty included the "War Guilt Clause" which held Germany solely responsible for the war and all of the damages done through its duration. Thus, an allied reparations committee was set up, and Germany was initially forced to pay $5,000,000,000. Later, in 1921 the committee met again, and determined that Germany must pay an extra $25,000,000,000, plus other costs, bringing the total up to $32,500,000,000 to be paid to the victorious countries by 1963! (4) The treaty also outlined portions of Germany that were to be given to Belgium, France, Denmark, Italy, and Poland. As well, all of Germany's colonies were confiscated. The general attitude in Britain was that Germany should be greatly punished for the War. "Make Germany Pay" and "Squeeze them until the pips squeak" were popular slogans. However, Britain's Prime Minister Lloyd George initially believed that Germany should not be treated too harshly; it would only lead to more trouble in the future. He felt that Germany should be allowed to recover and that France should not be allowed to take the Rhineland. He was only prepared to make the Rhineland "demilitarized". This created a conflict of beliefs amongst the British nation. The majority of the populace, as well as some members of British government wanted Germany to disarm, wanted Great Britain to obtain German colonies, have the Germans pay huge reparation sums, create Poland from pieces of land from Germany and Russia, and split Austria-Hungary into two different countries. As well, some thought that if Germany did not comply with the demands, further military action should be taken. With pressure from the British people as well as France, Lloyd George opted to hold Germany partly responsible, place restrictions on the German military, have Germany pay the reparation
