The salem witch trials
In the late 17th century the hamlets of Salem came across an evil mass hysteria induced by a group of young teenage girls. The teens used their innocence to capture people's beliefs in them, and turned "religion" one of the most powerful sources against the people of Salem. This was an act of religious misrepresentation. The girls used their power against the goodwives of Salem and accused them of afflicting the youth through a practice of witchcraft.Today Christianity fears nothing of the Devil, and believes that the Devil comes in a safe form. But of course, beliefs today contradict to those obtained in the past. According to Edwards there was nothing one was able to do in order to acquire salvation from God. Edward's preached religion so that many would fear God. He believed everyone was evil and did not have faith in anyone. During the "burning times" in the late 1600's Christians condemned the women and labeled them "devil worshipers" also people who had different beliefs were hung and burned at the stake for heresy. The Puritan's believed the "witch's" crime lay in entering into a covenant with the Devil, a very real and active presence to seventeenth century people. According to the Puritans, God would allow the
Devil to afflict persons or communities and to have a certain power over them. Though the Devil was usually invisible, when he had drawn a witch into the covenant, he could take the witch's shape and torment others. In The Crucible (1953) the teenagers came together to form spiritual practices. When the people of Salem had found out about these rituals they had panicked. The church was extremely defensive, and felt threatened by the changes. Abigail, in The Crucible (1953) used these people's religious beliefs against the goodwives. By employing all Salem's credence in God the young girls were able to condemn innocent women, and created a "witchcraft" facade against the goodwives which earned them death. Being arrogant, the priest in The Crucible (1953) failed to realize how many innocent souls he had destroyed, and by the time the priest did, it was too late. Danforth (priest) feared being wrong because all the mass hysteria that amplified in a short amount of time would become a fault of his.
