The Unification of Italy
The unification of Italy was a difficult and timely process involving both Italians and foreign powers. Both sides had their significance, but in my personal opinion, Italy created herself. Foreign aid, although important, was not as crucial for unification. It was the actual Italians themselves who planted the seed of independence. It was them who actually manipulated foreign powers into helping them. Outside powers provided the opportunities, but it was the Italians who took advantage of the opportunities and made the actual changes.Perhaps the most important person concerned with the unification of Italy was Giuseppe Mazzini (1805-1872). He was responsible for initiating the liberal movement and planting the seed of independence. Mazzini founded the Society of Young Italy, which taught that Italy should be free, independent, and under a republican government situated in Rome. Mazzini and his followers spread his gospel of Italian Nationalism throughout all of Italy and evoked independent thoughts into the minds of all Italians.
