The Unification of Italy
The unification of Italy was a difficult and timely process involving both Italians and foreign powers. Both sides had their significance, but in my personal opinion, Italy created herself. Foreign aid, although important, was not as crucial for unification. It was the actual Italians themselves who planted the seed of independence. It was them who actually manipulated foreign powers into helping them. Outside powers provided the opportunities, but it was the Italians who took advantage of the opportunities and made the actual changes.Perhaps the most important person concerned with the unification of Italy was Giuseppe Mazzini (1805-1872). He was responsible for initiating the liberal movement and planting the seed of independence. Mazzini founded the Society of Young Italy, which taught that Italy should be free, independent, and under a republican government situated in Rome. Mazzini and his followers spread his gospel of Italian Nationalism throughout all of Italy and evoked independent thoughts into the minds of all Italians. The possibility of overthrowing foreign rule began to rise as Mazzini extended his teachings to every corner of Italy. Cavour was the main intelligence beh
ind the unification of Italy. He was an educated aristocrat who believed that Italy should be independent, and free from foreign rule. He had an important role in uniting Italy. He continued Mazzini's work, which was spreading the idea of Italian Nationalism. He did this through his paper 'Il Resorgimento' (The Resurrection). He ascended to the position of respected prime minister of Piedmont from where he could use his political influence and power to help Italy unite. Cavour made some vital steps towards unification. He stripped the church of its power, he understood that foreign aid was necessary for unification so he devised some plans to achieve that help. He sent troops to the Crimean war (1854-56) in hope that he would get some help in fighting against Austria in return for his services. He also used devious politics and bargaining skills to get the French as an ally against Austria. He did this by establishing 'the Pact of Planbieres', a deal in which France would help Italy fight Austria to gain Lombardy and Venetia back, in return for Nice and Savvoy. Cavour was a skilled diplomat who used devious politics to manipulate foreign powers to help the Italian cause. Cavour was perhaps the most influencial Italian involved in the unification. Garribladi was the artillery of the unification. He was a renowned hero and blatantly acted aggressively during the unification. His significance in the unification comes from him capturing Naples and Sicily. On May 6, 1860, 1000 of Garribaldi's men travelled by sea from Genoa to Sicil
