Thomas Jefferson was born in Virginia in an upper class family with considerable wealth. The title "The Aristocrat as Democrat" reflects his blue-collar background along with his political views. The title itself is a contradiction in a sense that Aristocrat meaning a government in which power is vested in a minority consisting of those believed to be best qualified; and democracy meaning the opposite, the ruling of the masses. Jefferson had both aristocratic and democratic ideas in his politics, many of which were challenged by many other politicians of his time. He was and upper class man, who was seen as a demi-god by his peers
