Tranfomation of early america

North American Transformation Between 1660 and 1750

In 1660 through (and after) 1750, British colonies in North America were on a political, economical, social, and religious upraise. Change was the major theme during this period. Many influences from outside forces from Spanish, French, Native Americans, American intellectuals, and especially the English formed how the colonies thought and developed. Life in this period for the colonists was based on hard work and determination to create their "utopian" society. But it was not going to be that easy; there were various elements (different opinions, English rule, government, ect...) that stood in their way during this "great transformation" period of America.

Being that the American colonies were under English rule, the colonies had to answer to Parliament first. During the period of King Charles II, navigation acts were placed upon the colonies. The goals of these were to strengthen England and to essentially weaken the colonies and other countries. The navigation acts (1660 and 1663) "barred colonial merchants from expo


A major influence of this period came from the Anglo-American scientist, Benjamin Franklin. He, among others, influenced and taught the colonies much about life, in general. "...he believed that all true science would be useful in the sense of making everyone's life more comfortable" (Boyer 119). Franklin established some of the great libraries, volunteer fire companies, the concept of electricity, among many other contributions that made life easier for many.

The theme of change and unification brought the colonies closer together, with the ultimate conclusion of revolution against England. They were moving fast and working as a team of "Americans", surpassing the English rule. The colonies now had the economic, physical, and mental power to work as a nation. This period transformation was a very important factor in history, without this outcome, we would not be called America. This period "...cut across lines of class, status, and education" (Boyer 120).
