unjustified War
Every war has a cause, but does the ends justify the means? In Shakespeare's tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, Homer's epic, The Iliad, and Remarque's novel, All Quiet On the Western Front, questions the belief that war is never justified. The Capulets and Montagues ignorance of what began the feuding eventually leads to the tragic death of Romeo and Juliet; or Paris' decision to pick Aphrodite as the most beautiful goddess inevitably leads to the Trojan War. And All Quiet On the Western Front's Paul who enters war believing that the cause is just, eventually loses his faith and hope and later, dies without knowing the grounds on which the war was based upon. These three works lead the readers to believe war will never compensate for its cause. In Romeo and Juliet, the feuding of the Capulets eventually leads to the tragic fate of their beloved ones. Romeo and his beloved Juliet meets an untimely death because
of opposing families despite the fact that they no longer know why they are feuding. Nevertheless, the fateful tragic end of Romeo and Juliet will never be justified because of the families' ignorance of what began the quarrel. Deaths after deaths resulted because of needless wars. Many lives could be saved if a war did not occur. As in the war between the Capulets and Montagues, or the Trojan War, and Paul's partaking in World War I is directly resulted from avoidable causes. Yet the many bloodshed that had transpired did not justify at the end. Unlike Machiavellian's The Prince where he states, "The end justifies the means," it, unfortunately does not hold true with the cases of two star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet, the many deaths in the Trojan War and with Paul's augmenting skeptical view in life before his death. The wars that these characters partook in could have been avoided. Therefore,
