Wayne Gretzky Speech

A detailed Summary of Wayne Gretzky Speech

Like any sport, hockey is a game with a varied cast of characters. Hockey teams are composed of grinders, blue liners, solid goal scorers, netminders, and superstars. They each have their own role to play in the winter drama, but no one played their role so well as Number 99, Wayne Gretzky.

Unlike several goal scorers, Wayne has shown consistency of the past 20 years have his hockey career, he has become the highest goal scorer ever to play in the NHL.

He was born in 1969, in born Brantford, Ontario a rural community in the southwestern part of the province. His father, Walter spent his life working at a blue-collar job for a telephone company in Brantford. Several people may have suspected Wayne's father to cash in once the month tap began to flow. But Walter continued his job for the Phone Company.

Usually by age 2, most children can walk, but by that age, the first born son of Walter and Phyllis Gretzky had learned to skate.

At the unusually young age of 6, Wayne had graduated from the backyard rinks, and was ready to play with other boys. He often played with 7 and 8 year olds. Wayne could skate, shoot, and score better than any of them. Wayne's talent became a problem for Walter; most organized leagues

began with 10 year olds, not 6 year olds. That winter, the gods were smiling down on Gretzky. He was allowed to try out for the Brantford Atom League.

Wayne made the cut for the team, just imagine a 6-year-old playing hockey with kids almost twice his age, not to mention Wayne's jersey was at least 5 sizes to big. In his first year with the team, he did not win MVP. He didn't win the scoring title. Despite the fact he was nearly half the age of the others, he was a pretty average hockey player. He only scored one goal, and spent most of the season watching the game from the bench.

Since playing with the Kings, the first record Gretzky shattered was one of Phil Espisito's, Wayne eclipsed the record by scoring 92 goals in one season, Phil's 11 year record was 76 goals in a single season.

Then, by the time he was 10, he wasn't just Wayne Gretzky; he had become a national celebrity. His picture appeared in the newspapers, and magazines. Why all the fuss you ask? Mostly due to his incredible scoring ability. For example, at age 10, he had scored 378 goals in 85-game season, shattering the previous record by an amazing 238 goals.

On July 12, 1996, Gretzky signed with the New York Rangers, joining his former Edmonton Oilers teammate Mark Messier. He made an immediate impact in New York, posting a 15-game scoring streak in his first month with the club. He recorded 97 points as the Rangers' top scorer and tallied a League leading 72 assists, tying the club's single season record for assists by a center.
