Contrary to popular belief Adolf Hitler and the Nazis were not democratically elected into parliament. It was there strength and wide appeal, which because of the vulnerability of the Weimar Republic led to its collapse.

There was a major change in the performance of various parties in the Reichstag election. The Nazis gained support at the expense of the National Party, the People's Party and the Democrats. What seems to have happened is that a large number of middle-class voters were so disillusioned as a result of the Depression that they abandoned their usual voting habits and switched to the Nazis. The working class also proved some support for Hitler, although most remained loyal to their traditional party, the Social Democrats, or voted more radically for the Communists.

The German working class was divided about what it though of Hitler. Some had always supported the Nazis, who had, after all, started out as the 'German Workers Party'. Others were won over as a result of the Depression and unemployment, perhaps encouraged by slogans like "Freedom, Work, Bread", "Fair Day's Work for Fair Day's Pair". The German middle class consisted of professional people, including lawyers, civil servants teachers, with small shopkeepers and farmers. Usually members of the middle class were moderate and supported the Democrats and the People's Party. In 1929, however, they were badly affected by the Depression. Many went over to the Nazis, convinced that only they knew how to cure Germany's economic problems and attracted by Hitler's attacks on communism. Yet, despite the depression, many of the middle classes refused on the principle to vote for Hitler, disliking his ideas and methods. They were encouraged with slogans like: "No more cuts in salaries", "Fair prices", and "Restrict food imports".

Conservative minded women rather than men supported the right-wing parties in Germany more heavily. At first this did not apply to the Nazis, who had rigid views about the traditional role for women as mothers and housewives. Any woman who intended to make a career for herself would find that the Nazis acting very much against her interests.
