Native Peoples are synonymous with Canada. They inhabited this great nation when Christopher Columbus landed in North America in 1492 and even when the Vikings visited it centuries earlier. They are as much a part of this country as the trees that grow in our forests and the water that runs through our rivers. They are a vital to this country as the soil that we all walk on. Their way of life is, in many ways, vastly superior to our own, and yet the mainstream culture of Canada has learned very little from out Native brethren. When white settlers first arrived here so many years ago they were amazed at what they saw. Native culture was thriving in a way that white Europeans had never seen before. They had music, rituals and modes or trade that were completely different from anything they'd ever seen before. But instead of learning from the Native Peoples, the white man took over what was once the Native's land.


The Native Peoples that initially inhabited Canada were at one with the environment around them. They would only use what they needed so that they would not knock nature out of its natural state. When they needed meat, they would kill an animal. But when such a thing occurred it was done with such in such a way that every single part of the animal was used. The skin of the animal was used to make clothing and shelter for members of the community. The meat was eaten and stored along with the organs and one animal could feed a large number of people over a long period of time. The bones of the animal were used to make art and sculpt and were also used to make tools that were needed for everyday uses. The Native Peoples never killed an animal for sport or for reasons that were not absolutely necessary. The white man put a stop to that.
