Winston Churchill 2

"Let us never brace ourselves to our duties, so bear ourselves, that if the British Empire and its commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, 'This was our finest hour!'" Those were the words of Britain's greatest 20th-century statesman, Sir Winston Churchill. Churchill was born on November 30th, 1874 as the oldest child of Lord Randolph Churchill. He is most known as the prime minister of Britain during World War II, and for bringing Britain from the brink of being defeated.

Churchill attended a school by the name of Harrow in 1888. His father placed him in the school because Winston was doing very badly in speech and arithmetic, and showed no evidence that he cared about his future. Then, in 1892, he went to Sandhurst Military Academy. Here, Winston learned about how his father, Randolph Churchill, was a politician in the House of Commons. Winston wanted to be so much like his father and join him in the house, but obviously couldn't. Winston became a soldier and served in the army as a second lieutenant. In 1910, Churchill became Home Secretary where he worked with David Lloyd George, who soon came to be Minister of Munitions. In 1911, Winston left the Home Office and became first Lord of the Admiralty. His career was almost destroyed as a result of the unsuccessful Gallipoli campaign during World War I. He was forced to resign from the Admiralty. He then began a career of an artist. He found great pleasure in painting and loved to collect rare and unique paintings. In 1915, Churchill was announced as the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. He served on the front in France as Lieutenant Colonel. However, he returned to Government as the Minister of Munitions in 1917. He was also voted Secretary of State for War and Air. He joined the coalition party between 1917 and 1922 until it's collapse. After this, Winston took a break from Parliament for two years. He returned to the conservative government in 1924 and was given the job of Chancellor of the Exchequer. For ten years during the depression Churchill was denied cabinet office. His backing and support for Edward VIII during his abdication were turned down by the national government, but the public supported him and his ideas when Germany declared war in September 1939. Neville Chamberlain appointed him once more First Lord of the Admiralty on September 3rd, 1939.

In the election, Winston remained in second place behind Sir Alfred Emmot, who was a liberal. Howe
