World War II's Entangling Alliances
Before and during the course of World War II, there were many appeasement's, concessions and alliances that were made between countries in Europe, which put great stress on France and Great Britain. As members of the League of Nations, they were forced to make tedious decisions that were vital to the future of Europe. Unfortunately because of the Great Depression and the effects of World War I, countries such as the United States, France and Great Britain wanted to preserve peace so that the same mistakes the occurred in WWI wouldn't reoccur again. So because of their fear of a reoccurring war, they made poor decisions with growing powers like Italy and Germany to preserve their current peace. But in effect, these poor decisions and foreign agreements, which were tolerated, contributed to the cause, course and conclusion of World War II. The origin of World War II, you could say, began with the Treaty of Versailles. On May 7, 1919 the delegates of the Treaty of Versailles finally came upon a verdict after about 4 month of conferencing and it was indeed a harsh one. In the treaty, Germany lost 13 percent of its land where nearly 10 of its people lived and France, Poland, Belgium, and Denmark all received some of the terri
tory. Because of this settlement, when Hitler came to power, he long pledged to undo the Treaty of Versailles. Also the Great Depression had a bearing on the cause of World War II. Because as the Depression spread across Europe it created misery and suffering, and as a result of it, many people lost their trust in democracy. And because of this, people looking for a new form of government that promised simple answers to difficult questions, turned to fascism. And in turn, this is how certain leaders such as Stalin, Mussolini and Hitler were able to gain power and become popular leaders in government. But of these three dictators, Mussolini and Hitler were the two leaders that started and carried on the havoc in Europe. Ironically, these two leaders' countries and Japan were all members of the League of Nations. But at the same time, the two most powerful countries, which were able to stand up against these dictators, the United States and the Soviet Union, were not members of the League of Nations. As a consequence, such dictators as Stalin, Mussolini and Hitler were able to gain power and reek havoc because of this isolationism between these two World powers. But if these two World powers would have been members of the League of Nations, the League might have had an armed force of it's own and it maybe could have enforce the Kellog-Briand peace pact which many countries signed. But because there wasn't an army to enforce this pact, the invasion that the Japanese made on Manchuria went unpunished, starting a chain reaction. And because of this failure on the League of Nations part, it encouraged Mussolini to display similar acts of his own and he also went unpunished by Britain and France because they hoped the appeasement would keep peace in Europe. But because of this appeasement, it just led a path to war. Soon Hitler became jealous of Italy's and Japans accomplishment, and because of the League's failure to enforce the Treaty of Versailles, Hitler took great risk by reoccupying the Rhineland and succeeded. Because of France and Britain's appeasement between Italy, Germany and Japan started a chain reaction of events that got more and more severe, contributing to the cause of World War II. Soon Italy and Germany reached an alliance between each other known as the Rome-Berlin Axis which soon was renamed the Axis Powers when Germany made another agreement with Japan, further pushing the idea of war and conqu
