WWII 3

"Whatever may be thought of the nineteenth century, when it can be seen in the perspective of universal history, it seems the best time to live that has so far come."(P.4, editor of World's Work). World War I began in the year of 1914 and it ended in 1918. During this time, historians describe it as, "the beginning of the end of the bourgeois civilization of Europe."(P.1, Wright). Germany was most responsible for starting the war for many reasons. Many other countries did contribute to the start of the war, but Germany contributed much more than all the other countries. Germany was the country that felt it was superior to all the others, and they felt that they could conquer anyone, because they believed that their army, navy and air force could defeat all the rest.

The war wasn't all sparked on one certain date in 1914. Many events happened in the past that led up to the beginning of the war. In 1870, the Franco-Prussian War left France and Germany with great tensions towards each other. The Dual Alliance was created in 1879 with Germany and Austria, which made them allies in the war to come. In 1882, Italy was added to the Dual Alliance. In the 1890's the Trans-Siberian Railroad was formed which caused France and Rus

In the start of the 20th century, all of China, even the rulers, had realized the weakness in the country. This was all proven to them in the past 60 years. In 1842, Britain seized Hong Kong, and China was unable to stop them. The armies in China couldn't defend themselves from the forces of other European countries. Each time that the Chinese went to war, they were embarrassed and they had much taken from them. Many of the people of China wanted to upgrade the country, and make it more western. They wanted China to be an independent and modern state. The old politicians were the ones who kept China from all of this. China was faced with many problems during this time. All of its modern luxuries and necessities were imported, and this dependence on all of the other countries weakened the state and its development. Also its military supplies were imported from various countries, even its rivals, Britain, Germany, Japan and France.

sia to come together as allies for the war. The Triple Entente was then formed in 1907 with France, Russia, and England. All of these events, and the forming of these allies, affected the beginning of the First World War.

In the middle of the 19th century, Italy was in a maze of kingdoms ruled by all different leaders. Austria-Hungary ruled Lombardy and Venetia while monarchs of Spanish origin ruled Sicily. The Vatican dominated most of central Italy and the Northwestern corner of the peninsula that bordered with France was a significant 'Italian State' known as the Kingdome of Sardinia. In 1859 Camillo Cavour got France to join in alliance against Austria. Irredentism rose to gain control of Venetia. Irredentism included parts of the Austrian empire, which Italians believed belonged to their new nation. In the 1870's the Risorgimento shaped a new nation. This was a middle class movement, rather than an aristocratic accomplishment. Italy was now a republican country ran by the middle class. The army however, had little acknowledgements that was enjoyed other countries. In the 1880's the population went down in Italy, so to try to solve their problem, they tried to attract the people by building an empire in Africa. The army made that impossible because Italy already had a colony, and it struggled to add any possessions. The Germans didn't look up towards the Italians, as a German chancellor explained Italy to have, "a large appetite and very poor teeth." (P.31, Dupont). In 1882 an unlikely partnership was formed when Italy joined the Tripe Entente with Germany and Austria-Hungary. Some Italians weren't pleased with Italy joining the Alliance so they still planned the overthrow of the Austrian government. In 1909 an Italian politician noted, "All efforts must unite to preserve the Austrian alliance until the day when we are ready for war."(P.31, Dupont). Little did anyone know that the day of war was rapidly approaching.

In the 17th century, the rulers, the prime minister or the sultan of Turkey, were known to be corrupt and
